Honorable Maureen Namwali Emphasizes Role of Policy and Inclusivity in Ending GBV
Honorable Maureen Namwali, Thyolo-Goliati constituency member of parliament has emphasized the crucial role of policy and inclusivity in ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Malawi.
Speaking on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Nkanda Primary School Ground in Mchinji District, Hon. Namwali stated that Members of Parliament are dedicated to developing and implementing laws and policies that safeguard the vulnerable, particularly women, and promote access to education for all.
On behalf of the Parliamentary Women's Caucus - Malawi, Hon. Namwali emphasized the parliament's commitment to building systems that promote inclusivity, protect, and restore lives. Her remarks were made during a powerful Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) Community Campaign.
The event was attended by H.E. Kate Brady, Ambassador of Ireland to Malawi, who reaffirmed Ireland's commitment to ending GBV. The Ambassador stated that the Government of Ireland is committed to working with the government, Members of Parliament, and communities to fight against violence through initiatives implemented with various organizations, including the Malawi Irish Consortium on Gender-Based Violence.
Grace Chinyama, Mchinji Police Victim Support Unit Coordinator, shared promising results, noting that Mchinji district recorded an 8.2% decline in GBV cases, with 402 cases reported this year compared to 438 in 2024. This decline showcases the impact of collaboration and interventions under projects like the Reducing Poverty and Inequality in Malawi project.
Through this project, survivors of GBV have gained practical skills like tailoring, soap making, and baking, empowering them with financial independence and resilience. The event highlighted that ending GBV is possible when communities, government, Parliament, and partners like Oxfam, CYO, and Irish Aid unite for change.
